A Light in a Dark World

The word of God talks of our being a city set upon a hill

...that cannot be hid. What a wonderful picturre of a call to be a light in this dark world of ours. It seems so right when circumstances are congenial and our garden is full of the sunlight of the Lord's presence. But what if......?

A particular piece of bad news hits in, a nasty e.mail comes in, a phone rings and we are devasted with a completely unforseen occurence. So what then.......?

If we are only going to be a light in our part of the world when things are agreeable and serene then what difference is there between us as believers and those who don't even profess to have any faith at all? Such is the level of so much of what is called christian faith that I would not want any part of it. Surely if we are truly established in our faith in Him then it should not make any difference to our level of light whether we are in good weather or rough weather.

This week I received a not so good diagnosis as to certain physical circumstances and I had to make a choice as to how to address them. My relationship with the Lord had not changed, his love for me had not gone away, he still loved me with an extraordinary depth of empathy. So why should my level of light change, why should I think for a moment that my witness to his undying love should alter by an iota. If we truly are walking in the light as he is in the light then for sure our fellowship is unaltered by circumstance whether good or bad. So I choose to raise my level of light and praise him in all circunstances, giving him thanks in all things and seeking to show forth his love at all times. The apostle Paul said that All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose. What a wonderful truth that is to hold on to in all circumstances. But have you noticed that Paul prefaced these words with four other words which read 'and we know that' all things work together for good. I am deeply privileged to have come to that place where I know that these words are true in my experience and therefore can trust him implicitly regardless of circumstance. So I chose to put on the armour of light and be the city set upon the hill that cannot be hid. May you too become that city on the hill in your part of the kingdom in order that others may by your light have an opportunity to reach out in their darkness and find their answer.
